Leading dancehall singjay, Mavado, has stirred the pot of controversy with his latest release, “Tump (Har Up)”, a song that plays on Jamaican patois that would normally mean ‘physically hitting a woman’, but using it to allude instead about a hardcore sexual encounter. As he did with ‘Stulla’ last year, Mavado’s newly coined slang will surely spread like wildfire, but with domestic violence being a long-time problem in Jamaica, it will be interesting to see if others think the song’s actual meaning will be lost on some.
